Romania’s Former PM, Transp Min To Compete For Liberal Party Presidency In 2009

Romanian liberals will likely call for a party congress in July to elect a new party president, position for which the candidates so far are current president Calin Tariceanu and party vice-president and former transport minister Ludovic Orban.

Tariceanu said he would run for a new term as party president during the party meeting in June, after local elections.

Orban confirmed for MEDIAFAX that he too will run for party president.

"Yes, I will run for party president during the ordinary congress next year,” Orban said.

On the other hand, vice-president Crin Antonescu told MEDIAFAX Monday he doesn’t exclude the possibility to run for party president, but hasn’t yet decided.

"It’s a hypothesis I’m not confirming, but I’m not excluding it either. I haven’t decided in this matter yet. Right now my main concern is getting the party ready for battle in the opposition,” Antonescu said.

Orban also told MEDIAFAX Monday that liberals haven’t yet discussed the agenda for its 2009 congress. He said the party’s statute includes an article that states the congress is organized six months after the party’s standing delegation meeting.

"We haven’t yet discussed the agenda for the calling of the congress, but we’ll surely discuss it after the holidays,” Orban said.
