Romania’s Government To Keep Car Renewal Program In 2010 - President

Basescu said during a visit to Renault's Automobile Dacia plant in Mioveni the Government will not give up the car park renewal program in 2010, adding companies might be granted vouchers to compensate for cars that do not go to export.

Prime Minister Emil Boc said in September he plans to continue the clunkers program in 2010 after the number of cars included in the program and the scrapping bonus were increased at the beginning of the year.

Boc said at that time he was going to ask the Parliament for a confidence vote on a draft law that extends the clunkers program to companies.

The Environment Ministry proposed in September the introduction of vouchers worth 3,800 lei (EUR1=RON4.3017) for scrapping cars that are more than ten years old, and one buyer could use up to three such vouchers to buy a new vehicle.

Early 2009, the Government decided to scrap a total number of 60,000 cars and the scrapping bonus was set at RON3,800.

The funds allotted for this year's program stand at RON228 million.
