Romania Might Raise Health Insurance Contributions To 14%, From 10.7%

Geana said the CNAS and the ministry are currently working on a draft act to amend Law no. 95/2006 reforming the healthcare sector, adding one of the provisions aims to raise health insurance contributions from 10.7% to 14%, as it was initially set.

Geana said, during a seminar organized by newspaper Ziarul Financiar, that the value of the health insurance fund will increase by 20% if the measure is approved.

The CNAS manager said that, of the 21 million Romanian citizens, 11.6 million are exempt from paying health insurance contributions and only 4,100 people contribute to the health insurance fund.

Geana said the health insurance fund collects only 60% of the needed money, adding CNAS currently has no solutions to solve this issue. She said distraint procedures have already been initiated for certain categories of people.

Geana added CNAS has no debts to medical service providers.
