Local authorities in the area will thus benefit from a series of advantages such as the right to include a resort tax in the local budget and use European funds.

The normative act attesting Parang-Petrosani as tourism resort of national interest should have been adopted by the Executive early August, but was withdrawn by Tourism Minister Elena Udrea.

Udrea said back then she had withdrawn the draft decision after talks with the members of the Consultative Council within the Ministry of Tourism on changing the criteria based on which certain areas are declared resorts, criteria which would be included in the future tourism law.

Udrea allotted about 227 million lei (EUR1=RON4.2897) in April to finance 46 investment tourism projects which included the construction of the biggest ski resort in southeastern Europe, resort located in Parang.

Petrosani City Hall announced in May its intention to organize an auction meant to develop Parang's ski potential and the project cost EUR80 million, of which EUR72.8 million were granted by the Tourism Ministry.

The auction set for August 3 meant to decide the developer of the ski resort was postponed by Petrosani City Hall as it did not receive the environment authorization.

People close to the matter said the postponement of the auction was necessary as the environment authorization could not be obtained as easily as it was first estimated.
