Romania’s Govt Might Resign If Constitutional Court Rules No-Confidence Motion Constitutional

The sources said the Executive is ready to resign if the Constitutional Court rules constitutional the Opposition's no-confidence motion to overthrow the Government.

"The Government would rather resign as a form of protest against the infringement of the Constitution, than receive a no-confidence vote in Parliament," said the sources.

If the Government resigns, democrat liberals expect acting President Traian Basescu will assign Prime Minister Emil Boc as prime minister for the second time, though the Government's structure might be changed, said the sources.

The Constitutional Court will analyze Monday the challenge of the Democrat Liberal Party against the Opposition's no-confidence motion to oust the Government that will be voted on in Parliament Tuesday.

Romanian liberals, in opposition, submitted Tuesday at the Chamber of Deputies speaker's office a no-confidence motion to overthrow the country's all-democrat liberal government, which lacks parliament majority since social democrats switched to opposition. The no-confidence motion is signed by liberals, the Hungarian minority party and seven social democrats.

Democrat liberal lawmakers Thursday challenged the no-confidence motion to bring down the Government before the Constitutional Court and dismissed it as unconstitutional.
