Romania’s New Interior Minister Takes Over Portfolio

Romania’s new interior minister, Liviu Dragnea, took over his portfolio Wednesday in the presence of Senate Chairman, social democrat leader Mircea Geoana, and deputy prime minster Dan Nica.

President Traian Basescu did not attend the ceremony.

Drganea said the ministry’s main objective will be to decentralize administrative structures, adding that lack of reform at the level of local authorities will be considered a failure.
 
Dragnea was sworn in as minister Tuesday evening at the presidential Cotroceni Palace. He was nominated for interior minister after social democrat Gabriel Oprea resigned, as the Social Democratic Party withdrew his political support. Oprea also left the party.
