In 2009, the segment of notebooks, desktops and servers was mainly affected by the economic downturn, which triggered lower demand by individual consumers, on the one hand, and small and medium enterprises, on the other hand, as well as by putting on the back burner many projects in the public and corporate sectors.
Romania's PC market reached nearly 293,500 units in the first nine months of 2009 and reported an increase in the last quarter, to over 200,000 units.
Mihai Guran, country manager of Dell Romania and Bulgaria, said the fourth quarter of 2009 saw higher demand on all market segments, compared with the third quarter, which was backed by small and medium enterprises, individual consumers, as well as by the corporate and public sectors.
In 2009, PC vendor Dell saw an increase in market share by 1.8 percentage points, to 10.9%, cumulated on the segments of desktops and portable computers, which totaled 52,129 units.
PC vendor Maguay sold 5,000 notebooks last year, up 25% from its early-year target and almost double compared with 2008. At the same time, desktops totaled 9,000 units, in volume, similar with 2008, while servers totaled 500 units, lower by 200 units compared with 2008.
PC sales on the Romanian market were up 15% in volume in 2008, to 1.08 million units, and up 13% in value, to over $940 million, according to IDC Romania.
