According to the transcript published on the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry’s website, Andrei Nesterenko answered a question regarding the possibility for Russia to take action following the comments made by Basescu.
He said he understands the reasons for which Basescu made the statements, adding Russian practice does not involve taking action in such situations.
„We do not issue emotional replies in such situations, if national interest is not touched. We would like Basescu to draw the adequate conclusions from our comments and take on a normal attitude, with respect towards Russia and its foreign policy,” Nesterenko said.
Nesterenko said Thursday that Romanian President Traian Basescu had, on several occasions, unfriendly remarks towards Russia during the electoral campaign. The Russian official said that, „in the battle against his political rivals, he (Basescu) tried to play the «Russian card»” and accuse Moscow of involvement in internal matters.
„It is obvious that such absurd statements can only infringe on the development of our bilateral relations,” Nesterenko commented.
