Romania’s President Goes To Afghanistan To Meet With Romanian Troops
Romania’s President Traian Basescu, Defense Minister Gabriel Oprea and General Staff chief Gheorghe Marin arrived in Afghanistan Thursday morning to meet with the Romanian troops deployed in the area.

Basescu was on a visit to Kazakhstan on Tuesday and Wednesday and took a flight directly to Afghanistan.
The president met on the airport in Kandahar with the commander of the NATO troops stationed in Afghanistan, General Stanley McCristal, and British General Nick Carter.
Romania currently has 1,020 troops in Afghanistan and has recently decided to deploy 600 more troops in the area.
Over the past years, 12 Romanian troops were killed during military operations in Afghanistan.
