Romania’s President Traian Basescu said Tuesday at the public television that he finds it hard to understand the policy of the Communist Party in Chisinau, but stressed that the aggressive gestures displayed by the Moldovan President, Prime Minister and foreign affairs minister will not change Romania’s stand toward the Republic of Moldova.
Romania’s President Reluctant To Moldova’s “Games”
The President said he would continue to back the relations between the Romanians living in Moldova and those from Romania in attempt to strengthen Romania’s integrality.
Basescu also said he wanted all people living in the Republic of Moldova to get the Romanian citizenship no matter their ethnicity.
The President also reminded that he had insisted in the last three years on unwinding the conditions necessary to grant Romanian citizenship to ethnic Romanians living in the Republic of Moldova.
Asked whether Romania will expel two Moldovan diplomats, following Moldova’s gesture to declare two Romanian diplomats personae non-gratae, Basescu said: "I say we must not go along with Chisinau and play its game."
He also added that Brussels is ready to carry debates with Chisinau, following the stand made by the authorities in Bucharest, on an agreement regarding the access of Moldovan workers to the European Union, aimed at providing work conditions similar to those provided to Romanian workers.
Asked whether the authorities in Chisinau will agree with these aspects, the President replied: "It will be an option and the Communist Party in the Republic of Moldova will assume responsibility if it pushes away an opportunity for each Moldovan citizen."
