Romania’s president Traian Basescu on Friday signed the decree to appoint lawyer Catalin Predoiu in the position of justice minister and told him that the speculations regarding his former activity “will not endanger his position.”

The president made reference to the information according to which law firm Zamfirescu Racoţi Predoiu has been the main legal consultant of the Rompetrol Group, led by businessman Dinu Patriciu.

 Predoiu, is a partner with law firm Zamfirescu, Racoti, Predoiu and a member of the Bucharest Bar Council as of 2003.
 
“A good lawyer can represent anyone, even me, even the Prime Minister,” added Basescu reaffirming his support for Predoiu.
 
Earlier Friday, the Prime Minister forwarded president Basescu the proposal to appoint Predoiu as the new justice minister.
 
Predoiu is a specialist in banking and financial transactions and ensures legal assistance for banks and various institutions. The lawyer got his PhD in the sector of commercial banks in 2004.
