Basescu thanked both people who voted for him and those who voted for his opponent and stressed one of his main targets as president is to modernize the Romanian state.

„I shall be the president of all Romanians,” said Basescu, adding „it is important that all Romanian citizens feel their president close to them, regardless of whether they voted for him or his opponent in the election runoff on December 6.”

Basescu said Romania is facing a harsh economic period and stressed the need for solidarity now, more than ever.

„A president reelected for a second term has more responsibilities. His expertise over the years, as well as an in-depth analysis of his good and bad actions and decisions are a must for future accomplishments in his new term,” Basescu said.

The head of state also spoke about the obligation to find political solutions meant to help him carry out most of his political program voiced in the election campaign.

Basescu was reelected president with 50.33% of the votes, defeating his social democrat contender Mircea Goana in the presidential election runoff held on December 6.
