Many companies operating in this sector plan to give up textiles production, she added.
At the end of July, the textile industry employed 312,500 people, compared with almost 342,000 people at the end of last year.
The FEPAIUS representative said the clothing production sector will be the most affected, adding that the financial crisis will accentuate the last four years’ decline in the textile industry.
According to FEPAIUS data, starting with 2004, the value of textile industry production decreased by 56%, from 13.3 billion lei (EUR1=RON3.8573) to RON8.5 billion in 2007, estimating another decrease for this year, to RON8.3 billion.
FEPAIUS estimates consumption will also drop by 10-15%, but it will not significantly affect the industry, as in Romania the annual average clothing consumption per capita is EUR80, while in the western European countries people spend between EUR1,200 and EUR1,500 for clothes every year.
