Romania’s UDMR Proposes Voting Rights For 16-Year Olds

The Democratic Union of Magyars in Romania proposed the reduction of the minimum voting age from 18 to 16, and the minimum required age for administration positions from 21 to 20. Both initiatives will be up for public debate during the electoral campaign, said UDMR Executive President Kelemen Hunor

"We will talk with the youth and offer several propositions for public debate. We will initiate a public debate regarding the reduction of the minimum voting age from 18 to 16. After the public debate we shall see if this initiative receives support, and if it does, we will initiate a draft law changing the minimum required age," Kelemen Hunor said Monday in a press conference.

He added such a change is necessary since the 16-year olds are "mature and serious people, and if they vote, they do it for their future."

Another UDMR proposition subject to public debate is the reduction, from 21 to 20, of the minimum required age for candidacies in local public administration positions.

"We believe this age can be decreased by one. We have noticed in places such as Bihor and Satu Mare that young people have an appetite to take part in public life. We believe such an amendment would be welcome, since at 20 years of age people are out of school and can take part in local community activities as local councilman or county councilmen," Kelemen Hunor said.

According to him, the UDMR lists for the local elections this year contained many 24-26-year old people.
