"It is a major project which should not be forgotten, even if it was started before 1989. We will talk with Transport Ministry and Government representatives about this objective of national importance and we will look for financing sources," Boc stated.

The works started in 1986, but were stopped after 1989. The investment is estimated at around EUR500 million and is scheduled to be completed in 2014.

In August 2008, the former government decided that a feasibility study and an updated examination of the project were necessary before resuming works.

By completing the works at Bucharest-Danube canal, the capital city Bucharest would be connected to Pan-European Transport Corridor VII.

After its completion, the canal would be used for transporting commodities. At the same time, four hydropower plants would produce electricity, and water would be used to irrigate farmlands in the area. The lands in the neighborhood of the canal will also be rented for various constructions and utilities.
