Romania Seeks To Lure British Investors In Energy, Banking Fields

Romania will organize in the second half of 2008 a conference on energy and banking subjects, aimed to attract British investors in the field, Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu said Wednesday after a meeting with his British counterpart Gordon Brown.

“Gordon Brown, a former minister of finance, showed his interest in the performance of the Romanian economy,” Tariceanu said.

He said a similar conference took place in London in February.

Asked if the conversation with the British Premier hinted also at the restrictions on the labor market in Great Britain imposed to Romanian workers, Tariceanu replied the short time allocated to their meeting forced the participants to focus only on the issues at hand.

Tariceanu stated the matter of Romanian workers in Britain was discussed during his visit to London in December last year.

The British Premier said at the time the British government was not to lift the restrictions imposed to Romanian nationals for at least another year.

British authorities restricted the access of Romanian and Bulgarian workers ever since the two countries joined the EU in January 2007, changing their “open-doors” policy toward eastern Europeans.

The restrictions are subject to yearly revisions in London.
