Romania Sibiu Mayor Wants Four-Six Months As Mayor, PM Choice Interval

Johannis told a press conference Monday that an extension of the legal 15-day deadline in which he can choose between premiership and mayoralty will continue to be one of the main conditions he sets on the table before accepting to be nominated as prime minister.

The official said four-six months seems to him like an adequate interval for a decision, a period in which one of the two deputy mayors will be appointed as interim mayor of Sibiu.

Asked if the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania, the minority representative structure he leads, has appointed a candidate for potential early Sibiu mayor elections, Johannis said there were talks within the organization, but there was no decision reached.

"To be honest, I have held this talk with my colleagues, but we have reached the conclusion that there is no point in finding solutions for something that may or may not happen. When we are faced with this matter, we will decide on a nominee," Johannis said.

Johannis, mayor of the central Romanian city of Sibiu, said Monday morning he accepted presidential contender Mircea Geoana's proposition to have him nominated prime minister, adding he would come to Bucharest Monday for talks with Geoana and liberal leader Crin Antonescu.
