Romania Stays Out Of Middle East Processes Pending Beckoning – Romanian Pres
Basescu and the President of the National Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, met Monday at the President’s office and held a joint press statement at the end of the meeting.
The two were asked if they desire a more active involvement by Romania in the Middle East, as Romania has good relations with all political actors in the area.
Basescu said Romania does not wish to interfere with the actions unfolded in that area but it has major security and economic interests there, as well as Romanian communities.
The head of state added Romania is in a period where it reestablishes traditional relations in the area, which is why during his mandate he visited Jordan, Egypt, Syria, also mentioning the meeting in Bucharest with the National Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
Basescu also said the traditional economic relations Romania has with Egypt, Syria, Iran and Jordan but also Israel, "with whom political relations have constantly been good and have continued to strengthen."
"Therefore, we do not wish to interfere in the processes unfolding, but we are always ready to participate should our assistance be required," the President said.
In his turn, Abbas said the Palestinians feel Romania is very well acquainted with the situation in the Middle East, given its traditional relations with states in the region.
Abbas recalled the fact that the first official Palestinian-Israeli meeting took place in Bucharest in 1988, adding that all these facts entitle Romania to have a part in the situation.
The President of the Palestinian National Authority is on a two-day official visit to Romania at the invitation of Romanian president Basescu.
Abbas will also hold official talks with the leaders of the two Chambers of Parliament and with the leader of the Muslim community in Romania.
