Orange Romania 9-Mo Revenues Down 18.1% YY, To EUR800M

Mobile telephony operator Orange Romania saw a 18.1% decrease in revenues, to EUR800 million, in the first nine months of 2009,compared with EUR977 million in the same period in 2008, on the backdrop of harsh economic conditions and fierce competition, Orange Group said in a press release Thursday.

End-September 2009, Orange Romania registered 10.694 million customers, up 4.7% on the year. Of the total number of Orange clients, 2.236 million also use broadband mobile internet services, up 95% from the end of September 2008, the press release also said.

The company’s customer base saw a 3.2% increase compared with 10.355 million customers at the beginning of 2009.

Orange Romania saw a 22.9% decrease in revenues, to EUR269 million, in the third quarter of 2009, compared with EUR349 million in the same period a year ago. The company’s revenues were negatively affected by the depreciation of the Romanian leu against the euro, the press release also read.

Orange Romania CEO Thierry Millet said the company’s customer base saw continued growth on all segments – prepay, voice services based on subscription and data services, stressing the company strives to meet customers’ expectations and become the most famous telecommunications brand on the Romanian market.

The company’s annual average revenue per user reached EUR100 in the 12 months ended on September 30, compared with EUR122 on September 30, 2008, and EUR119 in 2008, respectively.

The revenues obtained by Orange Group in Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Romania, Slovakia and Moldova saw a 5.4% decrease in the first nine months, mainly on the backdrop of economic decline in Romania and unfavorable regulatory measures. Excluding the impact of the decrease on the Romanian market and the regulatory measures, the group’s revenues in the above-mentioned countries would have seen a 2% increase, the group said.

Worldwide, the group reported revenues of EUR38.14 billion in the first nine months of 2009, down 4.3% from EUR39.85 billion in the same period in 2008.

EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) margin was down 6.1%, to EUR13.37 billion, in the first nine months of 2009, compared with EUR14.24 billion in the same period in 2008.

The group’s earnings saw a 6.4% decrease, to EUR12.68 billion, in the third quarter of 2009, compared with EUR13.55 billion in the same period in 2008, while EBITDA was down 8%, to EUR4.55 billion in the third quarter of 2009, compared with EUR4,95 billion in the same period in 2008, the press release also read.
