Romania To Have New Center-Left Alliance After EP Elections-Liberal Democrat

Romania’s social democrats, liberals and conservatives will join forces into a new coalition, the Center-Left Pole as of November 25, the date of the EP elections, executive president of the National Liberal Party, or PLD, Gheorghe Flutur said Friday.

Flutur said he received reliable information that the three parties prepare to form the center-left Pole and that a major argument in favor of the move is that the cabinet of Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu lacked the courage to present the lawmakers the Law on the 2008 budget.

The debates on the law will take place after the European Parliament elections, Flutur said.

He said the liberals are trying to “fool voters once again” by announcing the new coalition after the EP elections.

The road between the leftist opposition Social Democratic Party, or PSD, and the National Liberal Party, or PNL, will be asphalted with the “Dinu Patricu solution,” Flutur said, referring to a recent scandal over national roads asphalting procedures.

Romania’s national road company CNADR announced Wednesday that all national roads, highways and European roads would be constructed using polymer-modified bitumen starting next year. This bitumen is 20% more expensive, but is of a higher quality and is more elastic.

Liberal-democrat Valeriu Stoica urged for the resignation of transports minister Ludovic Orban after the decision for the use of polymer-modified bitumen, saying it favors liberal businessman Patriciu, owner of Romania’s largest producer of polymer-modified bitumen.
