"Georgia needs today our political, diplomatic and humanitarian aid. It is a well known fact that Romania backs Georgia’s integrity and sovereignty, and has contributed substantially to the European emergency humanitarian aid missions. We will also participate in the efforts Europe makes in the post-conflict reconstruction of this country,” Tariceanu said.
Tariceanu said recent events show that the European Union needs to get involved deeper in solving frozen conflicts, as they are destabilizing forces.
He added Romania wants the European Union to get involved in security risk management both in the Western Balkans, as well as in Eastern Europe, and reminded that the next European Council will discuss a closer relationship between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union.
“Our wish is to have a closer relationship between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova, and I can say for sure that this issue is on the agenda of the next European Council meeting, following yesterday’s discussion (e.n. – Monday) in Brussels,” Tariceanu said.
He added Romania supports the efforts made by the French presidency of the European Union in finding solutions in the matter of the Lisbon Treaty and said Romania wants a strong political and economic Union.
"Our position as member of the European Union is not a purpose in itself, but an instrument serving the fundamental interests of Romanian society. We need the European Union to be powerful on a global level, economically competitive and politically respected, capable of taking action on the backdrop of economic challenges doubled by tension in international relations,” Tariceanu said.
He also pointed out the need to consolidate Trans-Atlantic relations and the vital importance the strategic partnership with the United States of America has in Romania’s foreign policy.
