Romanian government has empowered the Communications Ministry to pay some EUR100 million to use Microsoft licenses in administration between 2009 and 2012, the executive said in a decision.

The Communications Ministry will rent 163,138 Microsoft licenses for 2009, while the first payment is scheduled for 2010, the decision noted.
 
End November 2008, the government authorized the ministry to pay $26.72 million to Fujitsu Siemens Computers for 63,799 Microsoft software licenses to be used in public institutions. Additional payments of $31.14 million to Fujitsu are scheduled for this year. 
 
In 2004, the Romanian authorities signed a $54 million contract with Microsoft Corp. for the rental of 47,510 software licenses to be used by public institutions.
 
The licenses were rented for five years.
 
In February 2008, the government transferred the attributions regarding the Microsoft contract from the government’s Secretariat General to the Ministry of Communications.
