“The government was worried about the effects the price increase of natural gas might have on people with low incomes. Our goal was to find an aiding formula, so that the higher tariffs are covered from funds allocated by gas producers Petrom and Romgaz,” Vosganian said.
He mentioned approximately 1 million families will benefit from gas subsidies.
Gas subsidies will increase by up to 100 lei (EUR1-RON3.7246), based on the income per family member.
“Consumers with incomes below RON615 per family member will be benefiting from the increased subsidies,” Vosganian said.
Romanian household natural gas prices will be hiked by 8.5% February 1, Romania’s Energy Regulatory Authority ANRE said in a statement Wednesday.
ANRE said the decision was made to adjust the local gas prices with the higher prices for imported gas.
Following the increase, household consumers will pay 989.55 lei (390$) for 1,000 cubic meters of natural gas provided by Distrigaz Sud and RON983.1 for 1,000 cubic meters of natural gas provided by E.ON Romania.
Distrigaz Sud and E.ON Romania are the two major gas distributors on the local market.
