Following the application deadline of 25th October 2023, the EHF has received bids from Turkey, as well as joint bids from the Czech Republic and Poland, and Romania and Slovakia.
In the months following, different bids were evaluated, TV situations and potential audiences were analyzed, consultations were held with federations interested in hosting the championship, and initial site visits were made.
After considering the available information, the federations of five countries made a joint decision to promote handball in their respective regions. They discussed the benefits of each offer and ultimately agreed to organise the EHF European Championship Euro 2026 in women's handball together. The Executive Committee confirmed this decision on Thursday.
The 24-team European Women's Handball Championship is scheduled for December 3-20, 2026, and it will be the second one ever held.
The preliminary round will take place in one group in each of the following cities: Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, Antalya, Brno, Katowice, and Bratislava.
The main teams will be playing in Cluj Napoca and Katowice. Katowice, a city in Poland, has previously hosted the EHF EURO 2016 men's handball tournament and will also host the IHF Men's Handball World Championship in 2023. The teams will be playing in Katowice on the final weekend of the tournament.
The Spodek Arena in Katowice with a capacity of 11,000 and the BT Arena in Cluj Napoca with 10,000 seats are among the chosen venues.
EHF EXEC was mandated to find a new host for the 2026 women's handball tournament after it was impossible to host it in Russia, the original organizer.
Eleven European markets will host the best national women's handball teams in the coming years after a decision has been made.
The EHF EURO 2024, 2026, and 2028 European Championships will be held in Austria, Hungary, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden on the following dates: 28 November - 15 December 2024, 2026, and 2028.
