Romania Will Support Just, Sustainable Peace In Middle East - President

“The message I bring to Jerusalem is that Romania will support, both directly and from its position of member of the European Union, political moves targeting peace in the Middle East, a just and sustainable peace that would guarantee the security of the state of Israel,” Basescu said during the official ceremony in which Israeli president Shimon Perez welcomed the Romanian head of state, who is on a three-day official visit to Israel.

Basescu added he is glad the bilateral relationship between Romania and Israel “withstood the test of time, although recent history did not lack challenges and situations that were extremely hard to manage".

The Romanian head of state also underscored the “important role” the Romanian community in Israel has had in the strengthening of relations between the two countries.

Basescu arrived Sunday evening in Tel Aviv for a three-day official visit, at the invitation of Israeli President Shimon Peres. Basescu is accompanied by foreign minister Cristian Diaconescu, tourism minister Elena Udrea, presidential adviser for natiaonl minorities Peter Eckstein Kovacs and deputy Aurel Vainer, official of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania.

According to a press release of Romania’s presidential administration, Basescu will meet with Peres, Knesset president Reuven Rivlin, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Romanian head of state will visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum in Jerusalem, the holy sites in Jerusalem, and he will also meet with representatives of the Romanian community in Israel.  

Basescu will also attend the opening of the Romanian-Israeli Business Forum, the release also read.
