"To Romania, the strategic partnership with the United States is a key element of foreign policy. We wish to cooperate with the new administrating in Washington to strengthen and reconfirm our transatlantic relationship, to keep NATO relevant as a cornerstone of our security, to connect geographical areas in our vicinity to the euro-Atlantic area," the head of state said.

Basescu said that “boosting transatlantic relations remains vital, as neither Europe nor the United States can deal, by themselves, with all the challenges and threats of the twenty-first century".

He added the U.S. needs a strong and united Europe, just as Europe needs the U.S. to be committed and open to cooperation with allies.
