Mungiu’s 2007 Palm d’Or winning film tells the story of two students, Gabita (Laura Vasiliu) and Otilia (Anamaria Marinca), the first of which is looking to have a mid-term abortion in 1987, during Ceausescu’s oppressive regime, when abortion was illegal.
Besides the Cannes trophy, Mungiu’s film and its actors went on to win numerous other prestigious awards both in Europe and overseas.
The 100 Best Films of the Decade ranking places Paul Thomas Anderson’s „There Will Be Blood” on the 63th spot, while Gus Van Sant’s „Milk” is ranked at 53.
