Doina Matei is accused of murdering Italian Vanessa Russo by stabbing her in the eye with an umbrella, following a quarrel at a subway station in Rome.

Matei said she never intended to murder Russo: “I hit that woman, but I never wanted to kill her.”

Rita Russo, the mother of the Italian woman, said she expected Matei would receive a bigger sentence, but that justice prevailed in the end: “Sixteen years in prison are enough,” she concluded.
