The court also ruled that the authors of the triple killing, Albanian Blenis Shyti and Stefan Niculescu, would pay moral and material damages worth EUR82,393 and RON10,000 (EUR1 = RON3.6659), as well as RON4,077.7 in legal expenses.

The sentence, however, is not final.

According to the spokesperson for the Constanta Court, judge Razvan Anghel, the sentence rendered Thursday can be challenged by appeal, in the Constanta Court of Appeal, and then in the High Court of Justice.

According to case files, on December 28, 2004, Blenis Shyti and Stefan Niculescu went to the home of the Ion family in Mangalia, as Niculescu was related to them. The two are charged with having strangled the woman, after which they stabbed the husband 11 times. After killing the two, the two took the family’s car to the school where the daughter, 11 yea old Amalia, went. Amalia climbed into the car, as she knew her cousin very well. She was strangled, but then, noticing that Amalia had not died, the two struck her in the head multiple times. These blows did not kill the girl either, thus she was buried alive, in a forest. The autopsy revealed dirt in the girl’s lungs and mouth.

The killers then went back to the family’s home and wiped the blood off the walls of the rooms and the floor, and all traces they had left behind, after which they wrapped the bodies in a rug and in a blanket and took them to the car. Later, they buried the bodies in a forest.

Investigators found the killers and discovered the three bodies after having arrested the Albanian citizen on gun charges. At the home of Shyti Blenis, investigators found the passports of the two husbands, their mobile phones, Amalia’s birth certificate and the deeds on the Ion family’s house. Following wider investigations, police officers found that the Albanian had connections with Lucretia Ion’s nephew, Stefan Niculescu, thus they managed to apprehend the two perpetrators.

Initially, investigators thought the motive was involvement in drug trafficking, but later Stefan Niculescu said this was a robbery, involving EUR7,000 or 8,000, which they took from the victims.
