Neagu said the meeting held at the Singaporean Foreign Ministry was positive, and admitted there has been a misunderstanding between the two countries' Governments concerning Ionescu's case.
The Romanian ambassador said the misinterpretation was clarified during talks held Thursday.
Last Friday, the Romanian Foreign Ministry sent a note to the Singaporean authorities asserting that Ionescu's diplomatic immunity has not yet been lifted.
The note was misinterpreted, as it seemed to imply that Romania was claiming Ionescu was engaged in official duties at the time of the December 15 hit-and-run accident for which he was held responsible.
According to Channel News Asia, a coroner's inquiry earlier this month had found that Ionescu, who was driving an embassy car, was not acting in an official capacity at the time of the accidents.
The Singaporean Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a press release Thursday the country has appointed Singapore's Ambassador in Brussels Anil Kumar Nayar as its special envoy to Romania to establish communications directly with the Romanian Government on Ionescu's case.
The ministry asked Romanian authorities to facilitate Nayar's visit and other subsequent visits, by granting Singapore's special envoy and his team access to the relevant Romanian officials and agencies.
The ministry also said the Singaporean Government has engaged a lawyer in Romania to look after Singapore's interests in this case.
