The court ruled Ciomu may continue to practice medicine, but cannot perform surgery.
In 2008, the Bucharest Court of Appeals ended the malpractice suit filed against Ciomu and ordered him to pay half a million euros in moral damages to Ion Jiga, the patient whose penis he accidentally severed during surgery in 2004. The court also maintained the one-year suspended jail term the urologist had been convicted to by a lower court in 2006.
