Romanian Politician Nati Meir Placed Under Preventive Arrest In Corruption File
Meir, a former lawmaker and presidential hopeful last year, has been under arrest since October 2009 and has been indicted for forgery, possession and circulation of forged currency. Meanwhile, Meir was sentenced early March to four years in prison for deception and tax evasion in a case for which he was indicted in 2006.
A court in Galati, eastern Romania, issued a 30-day preventive arrest warrant for Meir Wednesday. The court ruling may be appealed.
The politician’s son was arrested last week after he was caught rapid with EUR20,000, with which he was supposed to convince certain magistrates to repeal an arrest warrant and issue lighter sentences in a criminal lawsuit.
Or Meir, 19, is charged with influence peddling and accessory to influence buying, both repeated.
