Romania’s Dec Inflation +0.23% M-M, Annual CPI Slows To 6.3%

Romania’s inflation rose 0.23% on the month in December, due to higher prices for food and services, but the annual consumer price index (CPI) slowed to 6.3%, from 6.7% in November, the National Statistics Institute, or INS, reported Tuesday.

The annual inflation slowed down also compared with 2007, when it stood at 6.57%.

In 2008, the service prices rose by 7.71%, while food prices grew by 6.02%. Non-food products reported a smaller growth, of 5.96% on the year.

The average monthly inflation in 2008 was at 0.5%, similar with 2007 value. The annual inflation based both on the index of consumer prices and according to the harmonized index of consumer prices was 7.9%, three percentage points higher than in 2007.

In December, prices for services products were up 1.3% on the month, while services saw their prices up 0.5% on the month. Non-food products saw a 0.5% decrease of their prices.
