„The White Ribbon”, a drama set in pre-World War I Germany, won ten Lolas, out of 13 nominations at the 60th German Film Academy Awards, including one Lola for best film, one for best director and one for best leading actor, which went to Burghart Klaussner.
„The White Ribbon”, directed by Michael Haneke, won the Palme d’Or in Cannes in May 2009, was awarded best film at the European Film Awards and was nominated for Oscar for best foreign-language film, losing out to „The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos)” from Argentina.
The German Film Awards gala was held at the Friedrichstadtpalast Theater in Berlin, Germany. Total sums received by Lola winners amount to EUR2.85 million.
The German Film Awards, also known as the Lolas, in honor of Marlene Dietrich’s character in Der blaue Engel (The Blue Angel), are the German equivalent of American Oscars.
