The 2009 Nobel Prize for literature will be awarded to Romanian-born German writer Herta Muller, the Nobel committee announced Thursday on the prestigious prizes’ website, nobelprize.org.

Romanian-Born German Writer Herta Muller Gets 2009 Nobel Prize For Literature

The Noble committee decided to award this year's prize for literature to the Romanian-born German writer "who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed".

In 2008, the Nobel Prize for Literature went to French writer Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio.

This year's Nobel prize winners were designated starting Monday, when American researchers Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak were awarded the prize for physiology or medicine, for discovering how chromosomes are protected against aging by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase.

On Tuesday, the Nobel Prize for physics went to research Charles K. Kao, Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith, the fathers of fiber optics and digital imaging, and on Wednesday, the Nobel Prize for chemistry went to researchers Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas A. Steitz and Ada E. Yonath for uncovering the structure of the ribosome.

This year's winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, the only Nobel Prize awarded by Norway, as set by Alfred Nobel in his will, will be announced Friday, October 9.

The Nobel Prize in economic sciences, instituted in 1968 by Sweden's central bank, will be awarded Monday, October 12.

The Nobel Prize comes with a EUR980,000 cash award, that can be divided among maximum three winners. The awards ceremony is held each year since 1901 on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
