The 500 staff at Nitroporos (former fertilizer and industrial explosives group Nitramonia Fagaras) will add to some 6,000 InterAgro employees to be fired in 2009, said Lucian Cupu, leader of the Free Union Nitramonia-Rompiro.

“Our main concern is the job loss at Nitramonia Fagaras platform, as well as at the other fertilizer plants in the country that belong to InterAgro Group. Overall, we are talking about 6,600 employees that will be laid off in 2009,” Cupu said.

He said unionists in the fertilizer industry plan to launch simultaneous protests in the counties affected by layoffs.

In December 2007, Romanian chemicals producer Viromet Victoria, majority owned InterAgro, bought the five units on Nitramonia Fagaras platform, namely fodder and azoth producer Nitrofertilizer, explosives producer Nitroexplosives, used water collector Nitrocontrol, special construction works provider Nitroservice and railway transporter Nitrotrans.

In March 2008, Viromet set up Nitroporos SRL to administer the companies’ assets.

The 2008 investments on Nitramonia platform totaled EUR30 million, mainly directed to equipment upgrades.

Apart from Nitroporos, InterAgro operates in Romania fertilizers Viromet Victoria, Sofert Bacau, Azochim Savinesti, Amonil Slobozia, Azomures Targu Mures and Donawchem Turnu Magurele.
