According to Nicolai, Abbas presented a briefing on the state of Palestinian-Israeli negotiations and expressed his hope that when the Israeli administration changes, after the elections, negotiations will be sped up and an agreement will be reached acknowledging the Palestinian state, "which is the historic desire of Palestinians."

Nicolai added Abbas said he is confident that Romania can offer support within this process, due to the good relations, especially human ones, between the two countries.

"(Mahmoud Abbas) sees us as friends and asks for our help to mediate a stable and lasting peace process in the Middle East," the Senate vice president said.
