Romanian Car Output Up 8.1% In May, 3.6% In Jan-May ’09

In May 2008 there were 26,420 vehicles made, while in the January-May interval there were 107,742 units made.

 

The most important segment, car production, saw a growth of 4.7% in the first five months of the year, from 100,476 units between January and May of the previous year to 105,221 cars this year. In May, there were 27,173 cars made, up 15.6% on the corresponding month of 2008, when there were 23,505 cars made, according to data from the Romanian Association of Car Producers and Importers (APIA).

 

The number of commercial vehicles made between January and May decreased by 12%, from 7,257 units in the corresponding interval of the previous year to 6,388 units. Exclusively in May, commercial vehicle production decreased by 52.1%, to 1,394 units, compared to 2,913 units in the corresponding month of the previous year.

 

Car exports grew by 63.4% in the first five months, to 96,135 units, while in May exports grew 1.6 times compared to the same month of the previous year, to 23,988 units.

 

On the other hand, imports decreased by 53.1% between January and May, compared to the corresponding interval of the previous year, to 46,948 cars. Exclusively in May, imports decreased by 48.8% compared to the similar month of the previous year, to 10,487 units.

 

Last year, imports decreased by 6.6% compared to 2007, to 232,555 cars, while exports grew by 27.4%, to 156,098 units.

 

In 2008, car production grew by 1.5% on the year, to 245,308 units.
