Romania Freezes Some Public Spending, Wages To See Moderate Growth In 2009 – PM

The Romanian government decided to freeze administrative spending in all public institutions, except for main credit coordinators in education, healthcare and agriculture, and wages will increase moderately next year, Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said Tuesday.

"Right now it’s fairly obvious that we have to pull the purse strings. We’ve basically decided to freeze wages to their 2008 level -I’m sorry, not wages, expenses. Wages will increase moderately next year, to help us cope with this difficult period," Tariceanu said in the opening of the Mediafax talks about Auto Industry conference.

Romanian President Traian Basescu on Friday passed a law increasing teachers’ wages by 50%, despite the government’s warning that the move would jeopardize economic stability.
