The ministry said it received a verbal note from the Moldovan Foreign Ministry, which required Romania to propose someone else for ambassador.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will announce shortly its response to this gesture of Moldovan authorities,” the ministry added.

Constantinescu was proposed for ambassador to Chisinau after Romania’s former ambassador, Filip Teodorescu, was declared persona non grata by Moldovan authorities and expelled from the country on April 7.

Moldovan authorities accused Romania of being behind the anticommunist protests that turned violent in the Moldovan capital following the communists’ victory in a general election held on April 5.
