Romanian Clunkers Program Expansion To Cos Could Boost Mkt By 15-20%

"The widening of the car park renewal program to include legal entities will thaw the new cars market a bit. If for next year there will again be a 60,000 unit target, we can expect a 15% - 20% increase in the market," said the head of Romanian car makers association ACAROM, Constantin Stroe, who is also vice-president of Dacia.

He added for this year the amount of new cars sold is not expected to exceed 130,000, which spells a 52% decrease from last year, when there were 270,995 new units sold.

According to an emergency ordinance published Monday in the Official Journal, the national car park renewal program has been widened to include companies, and the methodology for the implementation and financing of the measure will be established by the Environment Fund Administration.

Also, the legislative act states the introduction in the program of the value coupon, a document whose nominal value represents the equivalent of the scrapping bonus.

At the moment the program is in its third stage for this year, which is set to unfold between September 1 and December 11.

According to data from the Romanian Association of Car Makers and Importers, new car sales cumulated 101.770 units in the first nine months of the year, down 54.3% on the same interval of the previous year.
