Romanian Compulsory Education To Take 10 Years Under New Education Law
Compulsory education in Romania will take ten years and the ninth grade will be moved from high school to gymnasium, leading to a 20% decrease in the number of drop-outs, Education Minister Daniel Funeriu announced Wednesday, speaking about the draft law on education.

"We will analyze cases where certain gymnasiums are unable to take over ninth grade, for lack of space. There is no issue with teacher training, as high school and gymnasium teachers are equally prepared," Funeriu said.
According to the minister, this change will especially benefit pupils in rural areas, as they will be able to study close to home for an extra year and not have to leave at age 14.
Funeriu said the draft law on education is almost complete. "The document will be put forward for a first reading in the Cabinet; then we will hold public debates on it for a month," he said.
The minister said consultations would be held with parent, student and pupil organizations, the business environment, unions and embassy officials of EU member states, as the national education system must be compatible with that of the other European Union states.
Funeriu said the new law on education must provide the system with stability and predictability.
