"In such moments, even discussing such an idea seems inappropriate. We only manage to bring more confusion to a discouraged society and economy. (…) Under the current circumstances, no major tax hike is justified," Isarescu stated.
The governor explained that a higher tax would not trigger higher revenues, but on the contrary it would have a negative impact on tax collections.
In recent weeks, media reported that authorities might consider hiking the flat tax, currently at 16%, and/or the value added tax, which stands at 19%.
Late Tuesday, Romania’s Finance Minister Gheorghe Pogea said, however, the government does not currently plan to hike the flat tax or the VAT.
