Over 120,000 signatures were collected for the creation of the new party, called the National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR).
People close to the matter said former social democrat Marian Sarbu would be the new party's president, Oprea would be executive president and former social democrat Cristian Diaconescu would be the party's honorary president.
Several members of the opposition Social Democratic Party and Liberal Party quit their parties and joined the independent lawmakers' group.
