Romanian Court Puts Alleged Car Thieves Into Custody

The Bucharest district 1 court ruled Wednesday morning to place Tinel Niculae and Paul Mihalache into custody for 29 days on charges of theft and accessory to theft and to probe Ilie Alexandru, nicknamed Sandu Geamanu, at large, for alleged blackmail and concealment to car thefts.

Niculae’s defendant, Nicoleta Anghel, said her client has nothing to do with the recent theft involving the car of Andrei Hrebenciuc, son of social democrat vice-president Viorel Hrebenciuc.

Niculae and Mihalache are accused of stealing three cars and were placed into custody under charges of accessory to theft.

The court, however, rejected prosecutors’ request for Alexandru’s temporary arrest and ruled to be probed at large.

The Prosecutors’ Office of the Bucharest Police Inspectorate issued arrest warrants Tuesday evening for Geamanu and Niculae, the latter being allegedly shot and assaulted by Gigi Becali’s bodyguards earlier this year. The two are also accused, alongside others, of stealing Becali’s car in January this year.

Steaua owner Becali spent two weeks in jail alongside four of his bodyguards for the kidnapping of three people who allegedly stole his car. The court released Becali on probation on April 17.
