“Our priority for the time being regards the Kosovo situation. This is why we though it would be inappropriate to send our backup troops to Chad. In the region, our participation is only symbolic, as no troops have been deployed there,” said the official.
Last Tuesday, Melescanu explained in front of the Senate’s commission for defense that the Romanian government decided to send 120 soldiers to Chad.
Melescanu said at the time that Romania should prove by deploying troops to Chad that it is a factor of stability and can unfold such a mission.
Three weeks ago, the European Union officially approved sending troops to Chad and the northeastern part of the Central-African Republic, affected by the Darfur conflicts.
