Romanian Democrat Liberals Appoint Gheorghe Flutur Campaign Manager

"Gheorghe Flutur will be the campaign manager for the Democratic Liberal Party's candidate, Traian Basescu. Traian Basescu will run in the elections on behalf of the Democratic Liberal Party or independently and the party will endorse him, and Flutur will be his campaign manager," democrat liberal lawmaker Ioan Balan said Friday.

He said that this decision was taken as Vasile Blaga, who has been the democrat liberals' campaign manager so far, is interim interior minister and can no longer be in charge of the campaign.

Romanian interim Interior Minister Vasile Blaga said Friday he will ensure the organization of "free and fair" presidential elections, stressing that he will neither be President Traian Basescu's campaign manager nor will he be part of the Democratic Liberal Party's campaign staff.

The Interior Ministry is the authority in charge with organizing and overseeing presidential elections to be held in Romania on November 22 and December 5, 2009.

The former head of the ministry and also former deputy-prime minister, Dan Nica, was sacked by Prime Minister Emil Boc, following his comments regarding potential fraud in elections, which were widely interpreted as an accusation that Boc's democrat liberals might try to cheat to get President Traian Basescu re-elected.

Basescu, who has led the Democratic Liberal Party but who is now formally independent, has not yet said whether he will run for a second term.
