Democrat head Emil Boc said the decision was taken with 52 votes in favor, two abstentions and two votes against.

He added that the party’s leadership decided to call for the organization of the “superior management forum” on December 15 in order to end the unification procedure.

In his turn, liberal democrat head Theodor Stolojan said that PLD’s Standing Office approved the setting up of the new party with 68 votes in favor and three against.

Boc said that starting Thursday the two parties would work on preparing the unification congress, scheduled for January.

Stolojan said talks to create a new party had been going on for some time, and had been halted during the electoral campaign for European Parliament elections.

Stolojan insisted that this operation is not a merger, but the creation of a new party.
