Romanian Detainee In Italy Admitted To Milan Polytechnic University

Gabriel Bogdan Ionescu, aged 22, together with other Romanian hackers, was arrested in spring in Craiova, southern Romania. The young man, who had also won the Balkan Olympiade in informatics, was sentenced in Italy to three years and one month in prison for internet fraud, according to the website of Corriere della Serra.

The hackers sent e-mails asking for personal data to account owners on the Italian postal service website. The Italian press said they allegedly got EUR100,000 by using this method.

The Romanian detainee received the permission to participate at the admission examination of the Polytechnic University in Milan, while he was serving his penalty in a prison in Como, northern Italy.

“He was allowed to leave prison for three hours. He was accompanied by guards and left the exam room after one hour and 20 minutes. He was the first on the admitted candidates’ list,” Ionescu’s lawyer Pierpaolo Livio said.

"He only designed the program that allowed hackers to fraud the website of the Italian postal service. For this he received EUR5,000 from the other members of the group,” he added.

As Ionescu has been admitted to the Engineering Faculty in Milan and has already signed a contract with an important company specialized in IT, his lawyer announced he plans to ask the Italian president to pardon him.
