The open letter shows that, over the past five years, the number of employees in the education sector decreased by over 50,000, from 413,000 employees in 2005 to 360,000 employees in 2010.
The Government said recently the budgets of Romanian state-owned companies will be reevaluated, as a first step towards reducing salaries, but the budgets of companies that have already been restructured will not be reevaluated.
The Executive has pledged to bring the budget deficit to 6.8% of GDP under the terms of a EUR20 billion IMF-led rescue loan agreed last year and will seek a confidence vote in Parliament for its austerity plan that cuts wages, pensions and social welfare benefits. Opposition parties threatened to submit no-confidence motions against the Government if it seeks a vote of confidence for the announced measures which triggered social unrest.
